"It provides a way to granularly choose which folders from the internet you want to sync to your computer. When somebody alters a document, there are version controls, so we can roll it back to a different version number. ![]() Why not just use a common Box enterprise account or equivalent, and skip having the NAS at all? Well, that may be fine for some purposes, but I liked having something that I could see my data sitting in: call me old-fashioned."It's easy to move files around, even to, for example, SharePoint." "Egnyte Connect is a great application to save files." "I like Egnyte's recovery features. The other weakness is in understanding the process by which your files are synchronized between the NAS and the cloud. If you create files on your local desktop, they won’t be synchronized to the cloud drive at all. One weakness is you have to ensure the files on your file server are the working copies you are sharing around your company. So if you have a lot of data in the cloud and a lot of branch offices, you could be paying more than $500 per month, at which point you might want to investigate other solutions or building your own from Dropbox or Box.net APIs. There are three basic plans for storage that range from $25 to $230 per month, then add on top of that a fee of $40 per month for each office’s access of your cloud drive. Once they are on the cloud drive, you can access them via any Web browser just like the desktop cloud services.Įgnyte has a moderately complex pricing strategy that seems to take a page from the AWS playbook: charge for all sorts of things and make it as confusing as possible. Now wait some time until the files get moved across the Interwebs. Finally, you copy files to your NAS shared drive and start the synchronization process, using the control panel with the Local Cloud software as you can see below. You next setup your Egnyte account and storage plan. My agent was outdated and needed upgrading, although supposedly this should happen automatically. This is the secret sauce, and probably where your investigation should start: if you have a NAS that doesn’t support any agents, you are out of luck. Next, you setup the Egnyte Office Local Cloud, which is special software that is pre-loaded as an agent on the NAS box. ![]() Most of the setup happens inside a browser window and is very straightforward. You partition your disk drive, set up users and shares, and it appears as a file server to both Windows and Mac desktops across your LAN. In my case, the ReadyNAS from Netgear is a simple box with power and Ethernet cabling. So how does this work? First, you setup your NAS. There are probably others, and certainly if you know of them, feel free to leave a comment about your experience.

![]() New York bank regulators took possession of Signature Bank on Sunday, ousting its leaders and handing day-to-day control over to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. However, Fed officials said they do not expect to have to use that money, given that the securities posted as collateral have a very low risk of default. The Treasury has set aside $25 billion to offset any losses. A new Fed program will allow banks to post certain high-quality securities as collateral and borrow from a government emergency fund. regulators, depositors at Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank were able to access their money. The deal protected 6.7 billion pounds ($8.1 billion) of deposits. Treasury said they facilitated the sale of a Silicon Valley Bank subsidiary in London to HSBC, Europe’s biggest bank. International regulators also had to step in to ease fears. “I wouldn’t want to be running a regional bank right now where my services are no different from my competition,” Caulfield said. Large account balances - once seen as a positive sign that a bank's clients are well off - were a liability since they could be withdrawn at the first sign of trouble. Regional banks were seen as the riskiest, since they do not have the scale to compete against larger competitors. Notably, shares in JPMorgan Chase - the nation's biggest bank with more than $3 trillion in assets - fell a modest 1.8% on Monday. Investors apparently concluded that the only place to be safe in banking was with the nation’s most strictly regulated institutions. No matter how specialized or isolated your bank is, if there’s a risk of contagion, regulators have made it clear that they are going to intervene,” said Norbert Michel, a banking policy expert at the libertarian-leaning Cato Institute.Īmid the selloff of midsize banks, investors kept relatively calm over the health of the nation’s biggest banking bulwarks, such as Citigroup, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. We have so many other things we’re working on, we don’t want to be worried about figuring out the risk management of the banks we’re working with," he said.įurther, the government's actions suggested it would stand behind all deposits if doing so prevents damage to the broader economy. Wesley Zheng, co-founder and CEO of Posh Robotics, which is working to develop sustainable batteries, said he will move $4 million from Silicon Valley Bank to JPMorgan Chase. The Shanghai Composite index lost 0.7%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng was down 1%. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 dipped 2.1%, and South Korea’s Kospi fell 0.9%. Japan’s benchmark Nikkei 225 dropped 1.7%, extending losses from the day before. But fears sent regional benchmarks lower in morning trading. Hirokazu Matsuno, the Japanese government spokesman, told reporters a major ripple effect to the Japanese financial system was unlikely. In Asia, direct exposure to the risks from the U.S. Just because the government covered for Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank "doesn’t mean they are going to cover for these smaller banks,” said Chris Caulfield, a senior partner at West Monroe. Customers at other banks with deposits over the $250,000 limit remained at risk of losing access to their money for a time. There was no guarantee that the anxiety would not spread. The selloff happened in part because the country woke up to a new banking system and investors had to find the winners and losers, banking experts said. The stock of well-known franchises such as Charles Schwab, Fifth Third Bank, Truist and Huntington Bancshares all dropped by double digits. ![]() Shares in Ke圜orp and Comerica plunged by nearly a third. Shares of First Republic Bank closed down more than 60% even after the bank said it was taking emergency funding from the Federal Reserve and additional money from JPMorgan Chase. In both cases, the government agreed to cover deposits, even those that exceeded the federally insured limit of $250,000.ĭespite the message from the White House, investors broadly dumped shares in bank stocks. New York-based Signature Bank was seized by regulators late Sunday in third-largest failure in the U.S. banking history was the 2008 collapse of Washington Mutual. Regulators closed the bank Friday after depositors rushed to withdraw their funds all at once. “We need to have humility and conduct a careful and thorough review of how we supervised and regulated this firm, and what we should learn from this experience,” said Michael Barr, the Fed’s vice chair for supervision, who will lead the effort. In other developments, the Federal Reserve announced that it would reassess its supervision of Silicon Valley Bank. He also said the banking executives responsible for the failures would be held accountable. “Your deposits will be there when you need them,” Biden told the public, seeking to project calm. ![]() ![]() DELICIOUS SNACK ON THE GO: Looking for the most delicious party favors?Searching for quick yet tasty snacks? ![]() ![]() In that universe, there is an absolute now which exists throughout all of space. Most FTL concepts are conceptualized within a Newtonian understanding of the universe. FTL, no matter how you accomplish it, opens the door to time travel. And the few that are somewhat based on science, such as wormholes or Alcubierre drives, involve speculative concepts that haven’t been observed in nature.īut FTL has another issue, one that I only started appreciating a few years ago. They’re just plot gimmicks to enable the type of stories authors want to tell. Generally they’re not based on actual science. I’ve written before that there are lots of problems with all of these ideas. Often the ansible shows up in stories where actual FTL travel is impossible, but an interstellar community is enabled by the instant communications. ![]() An interesting example is the ansible, a device that allows instant communication across interstellar distances. There are a wide variety of other FTL technologies that often show up in science fiction. (I’ll be using this version in an example below.) One variant, popularized by Isaac Asimov in his Robot and Foundation series, has hyperspace as a realm where ships jump through it to instantly move light years away. Over the decades, hyperspace came in a wide variety of fashions and with a lot of different names: subspace, u-space, slipstream, etc. ![]() One of the earliest and most enduring was hyperspace, a separate realm that a spaceship could enter to either travel faster than light, or where distances were compressed. If relativity was mentioned, it was just as a superseded or wrong theory.īut by the early 1930s, authors found a way to seemingly avoid outright ignoring Einstein by simply hand waving technologies that bypassed the laws of physics. “Doc” Smith and Edmond Hamilton simply had their adventurers accelerate away at thousands of times the speed of light. Interestingly, the earliest interstellar space opera stories in the late 1920s largely ignored relativity. One of the earliest and most pervasive is FTL (faster than light) travel. Space operas, to tell adventure stories among the stars, often have to make compromises. I’ve always loved space opera, but when I was growing up, as I learned more about science, I discovered that a lot of the tropes in space opera are problematic. ![]() ![]() ![]() Solstices and shifting solar declinations are a result of Earth’s 23.5° axial tilt as it orbits the sun. During the June solstice (marked between June 20 and June 22), solar declination is about 23.5°N (the Tropic of Cancer). On Earth, solstices are twice-yearly phenomena in which solar declination reaches the Tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. On our planet, solstices are defined by solar declination-the latitude of the Earth where the sun is directly overhead at noon. The renewal of light and the coming of the new year was celebrated in the later Roman Empire at the Dies Natalis of Sol Invictus, the "Birthday of the Unconquerable Sun," on December 25.A solstice is an event in which a planet’s poles are most extremely inclined toward or away from the star it orbits. In one of the interpretations in Macrobius's work, Saturnalia is a festival of light leading to the winter solstice, with the abundant presence of candles symbolizing the quest for knowledge and truth. The Saturnalia was the dramatic setting of the multivolume work of that name by Macrobius, a Latin writer from late antiquity who is the major source for the holiday. Modern understanding of the festival is pieced together from several accounts dealing with various aspects. The Greek equivalent was the Kronia.Īlthough probably the best-known Roman holiday, Saturnalia as a whole is not described from beginning to end in any single ancient source. The revelries of Saturnalia were supposed to reflect the conditions of the lost mythical age, not all of them desirable. In Roman mythology, Saturn was an agricultural deity who reigned over the world in the Golden Age, when humans enjoyed the spontaneous bounty of the earth without labor in a state of social egalitarianism. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days." The holiday was celebrated with a sacrifice at the Temple of Saturn in the Roman Forum and a public banquet, followed by private gift-giving, continual partying, and a carnival atmosphere that overturned Roman social norms: gambling was permitted, and masters provided table service for their slaves. Saturnalia was an ancient Roman festival in honour of the deity Saturn held on December 17 of the Julian calendar and later expanded with festivities through December 23. In particular, the historical western European Christmas custom of electing a "Lord of Misrule" may have its roots in Saturnalia celebrations.įreebase 0.0 / 0 votes Rate this definition: Rate this definition: 0.0 / 0 votes Saturnalia may have influenced some of the customs associated with later celebrations in western Europe occurring in midwinter, particularly traditions associated with Christmas, the Feast of the Holy Innocents, and Epiphany. The Neoplatonist philosopher Porphyry interpreted the freedom associated with Saturnalia as symbolizing the "freeing of souls into immortality". It held theological importance for some Romans, who saw it as a restoration of the ancient Golden Age, when the world was ruled by Saturn. The poet Catullus called it "the best of days".Saturnalia was the Roman equivalent to the earlier Greek holiday of Kronia, which was celebrated during the Attic month of Hekatombaion in late midsummer. The gifts exchanged were usually gag gifts or small figurines made of wax or pottery known as sigillaria. A common custom was the election of a "King of the Saturnalia", who gave orders to people, which were followed and presided over the merrymaking.
